Fairport’s Veterans Memorial Nears Completion

veteran memorial banners

A little more than 2 years ago, the volunteers of the Fairport Partnership Design Committee were asked by Mayor Fritz May to undertake the project of designing the reconstruction of the Veterans Memorial at Potter Park. Shortly thereafter the Fairport Foundation began the effort of fundraising to help finance the memorial.

Today we welcome the participation of Fairport OCED as they manage the construction of the Partnership’s designs and augment the funds raised by the Foundation. It is this broad-based community effort that has led to what you see today. It is expected that the new Veterans Memorial at Potter Park should be largely completed by this Veterans Day.

We thank the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion as well as the thousands of people across the greater Fairport/Perinton community and beyond who have donated their time, talent, and treasure – in ways large and small – to make this project possible. We also thank the Fairport Boy Scouts, Fairport Teachers Association, Fairport Rotary, Perinton Quilt Guild and dozens of other organizations have helped the Fairport Foundation raise more than $50,000.

This project – its intent and its manifestation in bricks, mortar, and steel – honors the blood, sweat, tears and toil of the all those who served our nation on behalf of our grateful community. We believe that in every way, it represents the best of what Fairport is. We thank you all for your partnership.

A limited number of memorial bricks are still available for purchase. To buy a memorial brick in honor of a veteran, please visit www.FairportFoundation.org or call (585) 377-6010.

Canal Clean Sweep 2014

Harsh Winter Creates Numerous Volunteer Opportunities

102_2161Fairport, NY— spring is here and once again the Village of Fairport will be participating in the state-wide Canal Clean Sweep event. This year’s event, will be held on Saturday April 26, from 9am – 12 noon, will again focus on cleaning up public spaces throughout the central business and canal districts of the village. It is sponsored by the Fairport Partnership for a Better Community, the Fairport Perinton Merchants Association and the Village of Fairport.

Each year, scores of volunteers from civic and youth groups, to individuals aged 4 to 84, come together to participate. Volunteer services organizations, couples, families and individuals also participate as many village merchants power wash, sweep, and clean their storefronts, sidewalks and landscapes. Hundreds of bags of trash are collected.

Department of Public Works Chief, Paul Feeley, advises that the winter has taken a severe toll on streets, sidewalks and tree lawns. Therefore, those projects will be the primary focus of the Public Works Department in the coming weeks, leaving other spring cleanup projects in need.  This means the work of this year’s volunteers, particularly in the canal-side and village parks will more important than ever.

Event coordinators include Scott Winner of the Fairport Partnership for a Better Community, Joel Cuminale of Turning Point Signs and Design, and Fairport Partnership Adopt-A-Trail coordinator and Clean Sweep event chair, Cindy Hunt.

To register for Fairport’s Canal Clean Sweep 2014 contact Hunt at cindyhunt1964@hotmail.com or at (585) 377-2655 or, Winner at info@fairportpartnership.org or (585) 377-6010.

Participants are asked to gather canal side at the Box Factory Pavilion beginning at 8:30 am the day of the event and to bring rakes, push brooms, flat shovels and work gloves. Water, coffee and donuts will be available as will free pizza after the morning’s work is done. A limited number of event t-shirts will be raffled off to those who participated.
