Call for Fairport/Perinton Veterans
Dear Friend of the Partnership,
As part of our soon-to-be-launched fund raising campaign for the renovation of the Veteran’s Memorial at Potter park, in Fairport, we are producing a series of short videos documenting the service stories of local veterans and their families. If you are, or know of, a local veteran whose service story you believe should be shared and who may be willing to do so, please contact me at the Partnership office: 585-377-6010, or scott@fairportpartnership.org
We are interested in all those, male and female, who served in conflicts WWII to present. Thus far we have come up a bit short on veterans of Korea, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. We are also interested in hearing the stories of those non-combatants from the home front who, sadly, may have lost a child, spouse, or sibling in combat.
Interested parties should be willing to share their experiences freely.
We appreciate your assistance in this effort to honor those who have served our country. It is our goal to see that those who put service to their country before self are not forgotten.

Walker’s Celtic Jewelry Exhibit comes to Fairport
Among the many things we do at the Partnership is to engage in the marketing of Fairport festivals and events. Here is a prime example. We worked with exhibit curator Stephen Walker to arrange a live morning TV news segment in the wee hours of Tuesday morning promoting this world-class Celtic Jewelry exhibit at Walker’s Celtic Jewelry in Fairport.
TOWN OF PERINTON JOINS IN SUPPORT
TOWN OF PERINTON JOINS IN SUPPORT OF
FAIRPORT PARTNERSHIP FOR A BETTER COMMUNITY
The Town of Perinton has joined the Village of Fairport, the Fairport Municipal Commission, and the Fairport-Perinton Merchants Association as a funding partner of the Fairport Partnership for a Better Community, effective immediately.
The Partnership, established in 2000, is an independent, multi-disciplinary organization of volunteers who provide an array of professional services to the Fairport/Perinton community.
“We recognize the good and varied work done by the Partnership over the years,” said Perinton Town Supervisor Jim Smith. “It clearly has established itself as a viable, not-for-profit organization that is of obvious benefit to our community. We are confident that formalizing our relationship with the Partnership will be of real value to Perinton and its residents.”
Gian-Paul Piane, President of the Partnership, said the support of the Town is a welcome validation of the organization’s role in the community as it looks to the future. “The Partnership volunteers, who lend their time and skills for the betterment of our community, are eager to begin working on projects and areas identified by the Town administration, including assisting in the planning for changes coming to the Route 31F (Fairport Road) corridor and in Bushnell’s Basin, as well as canal tourism development and promotional opportunities in Bushnell’s Basin.”
Piane sees this new relationship as presenting an opportunity for more Town of Perinton residents to volunteer their skills and time to Partnership efforts. “Growth is the key to success in any endeavor,” Piane said, “and we see this as an opportunity to significantly expand our volunteer base.”
Services provided by the Partnership include architectural design and planning, marketing, promotions and public relations. Its history of accomplishments includes:
- Ice Rink at Fairport Junction – Skating rink in the heart of the village draws thousands annually
- Historic Interpretive Signage – the creation and installation of 13 historic interpretive signs installed on Main Street in the summer of 2010
- Festivals and Events – FP produces Fairport Oktoberfest, Fairport Perinton Winterfest, and Cinco de Mayo celebrations; supports the FPMA on Fairport Canal Days, Scarecrow Festival, and Come Home for the Holidays; and provides support to the Fairport Music and Food Festival.
- Design Standards – Created to guide developers interested in building in Fairport
- Public Art Program – The first local program of its type, created for the Village of Fairport
- Tourism and Destination Marketing – promotes Fairport as a destination to regional, national, and international audience through advertising, public relations, and active participation in regional and state-wide organizations
- Community Development Block Grant Façade Program – Led to more than two-million dollars in private/public reinvestment in rehabilitating buildings in the village’s central business district
- Community Service – the Partnership administrates Erie Canalway Adopt-a-Trail program across the Town of Perinton and has administered the Community Service Sentencing Program for the Fairport Village Justice Court.
Those interested in volunteering with the Partnership may contact the Director, Scott Winner, at 585-377-6010 or email to info@fairportpartnership.org
Celtic Art Show Opens at Walker Metalsmiths March 8 – June 2 2013
A Modern History of Celtic Jewlery: 1840-1980 Features Irish Treasure the Tara Brooch
Special Guest Lecture by Author Tara Kelly at St. John Fisher College March 12
A Waterhouse Tara Brooch will be making its way to Fairport this spring, just in time for St. Patrick’s day. The Brooch will be on loan to Walker Metalsmiths as part of a larger exhibit showcasing modern Celtic-style jewelry. The Tara Brooch stands as an icon of Irish culture, a copy created by George Waterhouse in 1850 based on a Medieval artifact. The subsequent Celtic revival of the late 19th and early 20th century produced many reproductions as well as popularizing the Celtic style as a symbol of pride for Irish and Scottish heritage.
It is deep respect for Celtic art and heritage inspires the show’s curator, Stephen Walker. “When I began making Celtic jewelry, in my mind I connected what I was doing to the great medieval masterpieces of Celtic art. But that link with the ancient style was very much influenced by what others had done in the more recent past. We tend to imagine our heritage on a grand time scale of centuries and millennia, but in reality, what we get from the generations of our parents and grandparents is our authentic inheritance.”
Author Tara Kelly will be offering a fully illustrated catalog of the exhibit with articles by contemporary Irish silversmith Aidan Breen and Scottish historian Mairi MacArthur. Kelly tells the story of how renewed interest in the antique Celtic style in the decade following the Potato Famine merged with contemporary fashion trends and a growing sense of national identity in Scotland and Ireland. On the subject of the Walker exhibit Kelly says, “The important examples of Celtic Revival jewellery on view are emblematic of the reinvention of tradition and the construction of national identities taking place both at home and abroad, through the Irish and Scottish Diaspora, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I’m so excited to take part in this exhibition because it provides the public with an opportunity to engage with these historic works of art and consider their role in how we define what it means to be ‘Irish’ and ‘Scottish’ today.” Her book will be available at a closing reception for the exhibit during Fairport Canal Days, June 1 & 2.
Kelly will also be a guest lecturer at St. John Fisher College for the Irish American Cultual Institute in Basil Hall 135 on March 12th at 7:30 pm. Kelly is currently a PhD candidate studying Art History at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Her dissertation deals with Celtic Revival Irish metalwork such as the pieces that will be on display at the Walker show.
The Walker show features over sixty objects on loan from private collectors and dealers ranging from the antiquarian reproductions of medieval brooches to the work of Alexander Ritchie in the early 20th century. The pieces chosen by Walker and Kelly for the exhibit will follow the theme of Celtic jewelry in the decades after WWII and conclude with early work of some of the pioneers of the present Renaissance which began around 1980.
Regular hours at Walker Metalsmiths are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 to 6 . Admission is free. An opening reception for the exhibit at 140 Packets Landing in Fairport will be on Friday March 15 from 5 to 8, which is free and open to the public.
